Math

Below is a math project that my students completed from our Data Analysis unit. Students had to generate one question and provide four options for their peers to choose from. After collecting their data, students presented their data in four different ways: bar graph, line graph, pictograph, and a tally chart. The last thing that students added to their project was three of their own questions, that others can answer, related to their data.

Writing

Opinion writing can be difficult, especially in second grade, but my students really worked hard on these pieces and it shows! Below, are two examples of opinion writing pieces that we worked on. In the first example, students chose their best feature and justified why it was the best part of themselves. The other piece required students to select a color and explain what makes it a great color. Students went through the entire writing process for both pieces and were very proud of their work!

Language

After completing a lesson on prefixes, students created the following prefix rainbows. Students got to choose the prefix that they wanted to focus on- this was put in the center of their cloud. They then had to choose 3-4 words containing their prefix and use them in complete sentences. These were displayed on the colored stripes of paper that represented the rainbow coming out of the cloud.

Reading

Infusing fun and learning together is something that I strive to do. I put a spin on a traditional book report this Valentine's Day, with the help from One Extra Degree. Students got to choose a book, on their reading level, and use their imagination to create a valentine's box based off the book. Some students chose to incorporate the main character, the setting, or even their favorite scene. Students also completed a short report and presented their boxes to the class. On the day of our Valentine's Party, the boxes also served as valentine card holders! Each box was unique and students were proud to present their hard word!

Making an inference is a skill that my students use everyday, they just weren't aware of it! We decided that making an inference is kind of like being a detective- you have to use your surroundings and the clues that are being presented in order to solve the mystery. My students provided three clues to their peers and based off of the clues, they tried to come up with what the mystery object. Since we've displayed them in the hallway, my students (and others!) are stopping to read the clues and try to figure out the mystery!

Research

With iPhones and iPads everywhere these days, why not use them to inspire our research project? Students picked a state from a hat and followed a guideline that provided them with details that they needed to research about their state. Once the research was complete, students began to create their iState phone. They created eight apps, the top of the app included an image and a title, while the inside of their app included additional information. When the projects were complete, students did a gallery walk around the room to admire everyone's hard work!
