The Sun and Solar Sytem
Introduction
Lesson Overview-
The Sun and Solar System unit was developed to teach 3rd grade students the following TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) while using new media text tools to help assist in their learning.
Learning Goals-
3.8 Earth and space. The student knows there are recognizable patterns in the natural world and among objects in the sky. The student is expected to:
-
construct models that demonstrate the relationship of the Sun, Earth, and Moon, including orbits and positions;
-
identify the planets in Earth's solar system and their position in relation to the Sun.
-
describe and illustrate the Sun as a star composed of gases that provides light and heat energy for the water cycle
Materials-
-
Computers for each student
-
Highlighters for each student
-
A copy of the Sun, Earth, and Moon passage for each student
-
Science Journals
-
Student Homepage
-
Create EDpuzzle using a video about the Sun
-
Create EDpuzzle using The Water Cycle song
-
Create a Google Forms quiz on steps in The Water Cycle
-
Create a Popplet for students to take notes about the Sun, Earth, and Moon
-
Create a Screencast on the order of the planets in relation to the Sun
-
Create a final comphension quiz using Google Forms
-
Within Each Lesson You Will Find-
Questions to Think About:
Each lesson includes a "Questions to Think About" section. This section can be used in two ways- students can answer the questions in their Science Journals at the end of each lesson or they can be used for a whole group discussion after the lesson.
Early Finishers:
All classes have students who complete assignments at a different pace, therefore, within each lesson I have included a "Finished Early?" section. This section allows those students who complete their activites early to partake in additional learning activites that are specific to the content being covered in the lesson. This will allow those students who need additional time the chance to finish their work without feeling rushed. Meanwwhile, the early finishers are continuing to further their knowledge on the lesson.
Goal- My goal with creating this interactive webpage is that my students will have the opportunity to become their own guide in learning about The Sun and Solar System. They will be provided with lessons that will keep them engaged while still holding them accountable for the information that they are learning. Students will be the facilitator in many of these lessons and will be responsbile for being able to communiate that they understand the information. I also wanted to give my students the opportunity to create products using technology rather than the product being created in the traditional way using paper and pencil.
