Advantages: Students are still practicing the “old” way of reading then applying the information that they've learned by collaborating with their peers through a new media tool. Students will use the information they learned in the reading to participate in the Popplet activity. The Popplet includes 3 prompts: What did you learn about Earth? What did you learn about the Moon? What did you learn about the Sun? Students will include facts they learned about each. They are sharing and making connections to one another through new media. This tool allows students to guide the conversation being had and encourage classmates to think deeper. Students are able to extend their thinking by having a chance to read their classmates thoughts and ideas and when doing this virtually, without having to shuffle through several different pieces of paper, they are also saving valuable classroom time. It also allows all students to participate and contribute to the conversation being had, especially those reluctant learners who fear speaking in front of the class or with their peers. Popplet allows for students "notes" to be organized in the sense that it is saved online and they do not have to keep up with multiple pieces of paper or risk the change of losing their notes. If needed, students can return to the saved boards to add additional information or read new posts. I am also able to view one page without having to look at all students’ notebooks which allows me a glimpse into who did and understood the reading. By visiting this common area and having the option to view all student’s comments and thoughts at once allows for an easy grading and evaluating process.

Disadvantages: The vocabulary is higher-level in the Sun, Earth, and Moon passage and may be a challenge for some students to read. Student’s level with the use of Popplet will vary and it may take time to explain how to use the tool. Also, in order for each student to participate in the Popplet, access to several computers is needed.
